For optimum
productivity, there is the need for all workers to have satisfactory
work-life balance and for this to be achieved, one should be able to
adequately handle the challenges of the four life quadrants (that is
work, family, self and friends/community). This study examines the
challenges faced by educational managers in handling their four life
quadrants. The study sought to answer two specific questions: (1)
what are the challenging experiences of the educational managers
related to their four life quadrants and (2) how they were able to
manage the challenges, problems and conflicts they have encountered.
Using eleven (11) educational managers who were purposively
selected, the researchers employed a phenomenological research
design to understand and describe the challenging experiences of
educational managers, how they cope and manage the problems and
conflicts encountered. This study revealed that all educational
managers have gone through challenges, problems and conflicts in the
discharge of their work related duties. They are not superheroes as
some may think; they also feel sad and even upset when problems and
conflicts arise. The good thing is that, they have learnt better
ways of dealing with the challenges they encounter not only in their
work but also in their family, with friends and community and also
giving more time for themselves. This implies that, in every
challenge and situation in their life, there is a corresponding
right solution. As an educational manager, proper management;
planning ahead and managing time and schedules, setting priorities,
forming a team, delegating tasks, monitoring, assessing, reflecting
and improving oneself, is the wisdom disclosed by the participants
to minimize conflicts and major problems in their four life
quadrants and to create a healthy work-life balance.
