The objective of this study was to evaluate the overall five year survival rate, pattern of disease presentation, and to determine some factors that are predictive of five years survival among patients diagnosed and managed for breast cancer between 2005 and 2011.

Background information and histological type were obtained from the patients records. Clinical, Radiological, Staging (Manchester) and site of metastasis information were obtained during pre-treatment examination and follow-up periods.

At presentation, stage III was (45.6%) followed by stage IV (35%) stage I, 2.4% and II with 16.6%. The overall five year survival in the population studied was 25.6% (45/176). Five year survival rates for patients with stages II, III and IV diseases at diagnosis were 45%, 15% and 5% respectively. Five year survival rate for early stages (I and II) was 45% while advanced stages (III&IV) was 16%. The median survival time for the patients studied was 30 (28.5-31.5 95%CI) months. Hazard ratio (HR) of 1.28(0.96-1.72) was obtained for disease stages above stage 1 at presentation relative to stage 1 disease.

A greater percentage of our patient presented at young peak age of incidence in advanced stages of the disease and with aggressive tumour which may have resulted in poor survival outcome. These factors should be considered when planning health programmes to improve survival in this group of patients. Further study and researches are required to determine the characteristics of each tumour for effective treatment and better outcome.
